Democrats are hailing first lady Michelle Obama’s visit to Tucson as the latest sign that Arizona will be up for grabs in November’s presidential election, but Republicans insist that the state will go red just like it has the past three election cycles.

Obama is expected to deliver remarks at a fundraiser in the southern Arizona city on Monday evening as part of a four-state campaign push in the West, with other stops in Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico.

Nine anti-SB1070 protesters who were arrested for disrupting traffic have been released from jail. A judge entered not guilty pleas for all nine, who are charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing a roadway.

Their actions delayed light-rail trains along Central Avenue during protests of the anti-immigration bill that was heard before the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

The five men and four women spent the night, and most of Thursday at the Fourth Avenue Jail.

Amy McMullen, of Gold Canyon, was one of the arrested protesters. Her husband, Bob McMullen was furious that she and the others had to spend 18 hours behind bars, but says she made her point.

“I can’t imagine what people of color in this state are going through, day in, day out,” he said.

“I’m just so proud of the whole group [of protesters] for getting that message across.

And he says that message is that Immigration and Customs Enforcement is tearing families apart.

“ICE has deported more than one million people in the past 3 years, my family has been torn apart for 23 hours, and ICE has deported more than 40,000 parents of citizen children,” Bob McMullen said.

The group will return to court May 16.

Tonight could have been a night that lit US Airways Center ablaze with desire for the Suns to play their way into the postseason with a win in the season’s final game.

Instead, it is meaningless. The only thing being lit is a candle for the idea that Two-Time Most Valuable Player Steve Nash might be playing his final game in Phoenix tonight with free agency available to him in July.

Even with Nash at the helm, the Suns missed the playoffs in two consecutive seasons for the first time since 1988 by losing 100-88 Tuesday night at Utah.

The Jazz (35-30) clinched the Western Conference’s eighth and final playoff seed by snapping a seven-game losing streak to Phoenix and holding the Suns to 40.5 percent shooting with 15 turnovers. The Suns will miss the playoffs for the third time in four years and are left to play out the schedule tonight against San Antonio, the West’s top seed who likely will use stars lightly or not at all tonight.

The Suns (33-32) rallied from a 12-19 start for an 18-8 stretch but are closing with five losses in their past eight games.

The Suns had to fight from behind nearly all night in Utah because of a sloppy first half. They were already missing Channing Frye, who was present but out due to Saturday’s shoulder subluxation, and then Grant Hill’s comeback was cut short after a brief first-quarter appearance.

“We didn’t deserve it tonight,” Nash said. “Without Channing and Grant, it was just too much to ask.” Hill had a good day of testing out his sore right knee after 10 days out of action and getting it drained twice but missed three shots and had it iced after three minutes of play.

Frye’s replacement, rookie Markieff Morris, made his first start since late January and continued a season-long fouling trend. He committed four fouls in his first 19 minutes, keeping up the pace that had him and Robin Lopez tied for the ninth most fouls per 48 minutes (7.0) in the NBA. Morris, Nash, Jared Dudley also each went 0 for 3 on 3-pointers.

The problems up front were further complicated by center Marcin Gortat, who made his first shot from the perimeter and then had his next five shots in the lane blocked and missed his final seven shots in all. “You can’t afford to not play well in a game like this,” Suns coach Alvin Gentry said. “They did a good job overall on screen-and-rolls. They took Marcin out of the game. We have to shoot the ball better from the perimeter. They outplayed us.”

In the past 11 days, Gortat has posted shooting games of 1 for 8 at Utah, 2 for 13 against Oklahoma City and 3 for 12 at San Antonio.

Phoenix police said two men were shot dead Tuesday in a confrontation that apparently involved a stalker. A police officer shot one of the victims moments after the victim had allegedly shot another man during a scuffle on a street on the city’s north side.

Police told the Arizona Republic the officer had been dispatched to the scene in response to a stalking call. The officer was not injured.

The exact circumstances of the shootings was not known, but a resident of the neighborhood told the Republic the area was usually very quiet.

Phoenix police have identified a 29-year-old man who died after being shot in a Phoenix neighborhood late Sunday morning. Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. James Holmes said Carl D. Scott died at a Phoenix hospital after he was shot about 11 a.m. in front of a house on Colter Street near 36th Avenue.

Officers said the man had been shot in his stomach. Nearby was his car, where officers found his son, who was still strapped into his car seat, Holmes said. Officers said the boy was not injured, and he was turned over to firefighters to be cared for until family could be called. Family told CBS 5 News on Monday the boy is 3 years old.

Investigators said they believe Scott had driven to the neighborhood, gotten into an argument with three black men and was shot.

The National Weather Service says Phoenix should see its first 100-degree day of the year on Saturday as a strong high pressure system builds over the region.

Afternoon temperatures are expected to hit 100 on Saturday and 101 on Sunday before dropping back into the 90s next week. Tucson residents won’t see the mercury climb quite as high, with temperatures of 96 degrees on Saturday and 98 predicted on Sunday.

The average date the Phoenix area hits 100 degrees is May 18, but in 1988 the century mark hit early on March 26. The latest day for the first 100-degree day was June 18, 1913.

Tucson usually sees a 100-degree day by May 26.

A Phoenix man has been arrested for allegedly stealing large quantities of high-dollar merchandise from Walmart stores throughout Maricopa County. Authorities say 34-year-old Jason Dee Draper also is under investigation for similar burglaries throughout Arizona.

Detectives from the Chandler Police Property Crimes Unit arrested Draper on Wednesday on suspicion of multiple counts of burglary and trafficking in stolen property.

Police believe Draper has stolen $45,000 worth of merchandise in Maricopa County alone.

Investigators say Draper allegedly stole the items to support a methamphetamine habit.

Authorities didn’t immediately know whether Draper has a lawyer yet for his case.

Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith, center Martin Hanzal and left wing Lauri Korpikoski did not practice with the team on Monday. Phoenix coach Dave Tippett would not say if they would be available for Game 3 of the Coyotes’ playoff series against Chicago on Tuesday night, only that they were being evaluated.

Smith was injured in the second period of Phoenix’s 4-3 overtime loss in Game 2 on Saturday when he was struck on the head by the shoulder of Chicago’s Andrew Shaw. Smith lay on the ice for five minutes but finished the game.

Hanzal went off in the first period with what appeared to be a lower-body injury and Korpikoski went out in the third after being checked hard into the boards.
